![]() ![]() A relatively short read portrayed in individual stories connected by a singular factor. All that being said, the prose is quite beautiful and it's considered a "classic" for very good reason. Brite - Sad, depraved, disgusting, kind of the blueprint for "fucked up fiction" in my opinion. ![]() ![]() The writing is very sterile in a way that I think suits the subject matter. Basically about a world where certain humans are treated like cattle and harvested for food. I don't think it got to me quite as much as it may have set out to, but I do think it is quite a good read. "Tender is the Flesh" by Agustina Bazterrica - This one has been making the rounds on "BookTok" for being really harrowing and disgusting. A lot of these may not be "straightforward horror" rather "horror adjacent," but I think they count. With that in mind, here are some that have really stuck with me with some very vague synopses. I read a lot and horror is probably my go-to genre most days. As you can imagine, it's just as weird and sinister as Area X.Īnd book 3 is Acceptance, which jumps around the timeline a bit, has multiple viewpoint characters, and ties up a lot of the loose ends from the other two books. You can watch the film to get a sense of the tone and style and see if you'd be into what the other two books are putting down.īook 2 is Authority, and it focuses on Southern Reach, the organisation itself. ![]() That one deals is an expedition into Area X to work out what the hell is going on with it. You might be familiar with book 1 already it's Annihilation and was adapted into an also great film with Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Oscar Isaac and Tessa Thompson in 2018. Southern Reach is an organisation that deals with expeditions into "Area X" an exceptionally odd uninhabited and abandoned place that has given severe mental trauma and aggressive cancers to people who set foot in it. The Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer probably exists somewhere between weird and pretty unsettling, and outright horror, but it might be what you're looking for. ![]()
